Shinsegae Duty Free Myeongdong features Christmas-themed media façade

On the evening of November 27, a tour group from the Philippines visited Shinsegae Duty Free’s Myeongdong branch.

The 17-member group, having arrived in Korea on the 24th, visited Namiseom Island, Jumunjin Beach, and other filming locations of popular Korean dramas (e.g. Goblin, Winter Sonata) during their five-night/six-day stay.

On the final day, many of the members asked to see Shinsegae’s media façade after finishing their duty-free shopping. After taking a group photo in front of Seoul Central Post Office, they explored Myeongdong—which is important because it shows that the Christmas-themed media façade has the potential to encourage shoppers to go out into (and make purchases in) the Myeongdong area.

CEO Jung Hyun-il of Jung Ho Travel said, “Shinsegae’s Christmas media façade has already become famous in the Philippines via social media. We have reservations for groups who want to see it extending into 2023.”

Shinsegae Department Store’s Christmas display, which is made based on a different concept each year, is a highly-anticipated year-end attraction. People usually start gathering in front of Seoul Central Post Office in mid-November to see it.

This year’s three-minute façade video was of a party at a magical castle at the end of a snowy sleigh ride.

There was also a short, cinematic montage of colorful Christmas tree ornaments, gift boxes, and a large tree. The video ends with the phrase “Dreaming of Christmas” to heighten the excitement for year-end festivities.

The number of Southeast Asian tourists who visit Shinsegae Duty Free through a tour group is growing very quickly, from 40 in April to over 4,000 in November. That number is expected to continue increasing until February due to tourists who wish to experience Korea’s cold winter weather.
