- Shinsegae Duty Free’s Myeongdong branch visited by incentive tour group of 250 Vietnamese travelers
Shinsegae Duty Free’s Myeongdong branch was visited by the largest foreign tour group since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The group was made up of employees of Manulife’s (global insurance firm) Vietnam office.
On November 7, 180 employees came from Hanoi. On November 8, another 70 visited from Ho Chi Minh City.
“Incentive tourism” refers to overseas trips provided by companies as a reward to outstanding employees and is characterized by higher expenditure on shopping than regular tour groups (due to the company paying the majority of the trip’s expenses). It is also why international competition is especially intense over securing incentive tour customers as a means of revitalizing tourism industries that were hit hard by the pandemic.
Korea is said to have been chosen as the group’s destination, after consideration of many other options, due to the popularity of Korean culture.
The reason for the group’s visit to Shinsegae Duty Free was, in fact, the popularity of Korean fashion (e.g. O!Oi, Romantic Crown, Evisu) and cosmetics brands (e.g. Tamburins, V&A). Tour members made purchases from a wide range of brands, including: Sulwhasoo, Ohui, Style Nanda, Innisfree, Vedi Vero, Gentle Monster, Fila, Discovery Expedition, and Stretchy Angels.
In addition to duty-free shopping, the group explored Korean culture by visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and picking fruit at a farm.
Starting with the first Vietnamese group tour in April, the number of Southeast Asian group tourists who visited Shinsegae Duty Free this year, as of November 2, is 5,250—which is just 4% of the 2019 figure but growing very quickly.
General Manager Shin Seok-hyun of Shinsegae Duty Free’s Overseas Sales Division said, “We are receiving a rapidly- increasing number of group tours due to the resumption of visa-free entry on November 1. Shinsegae Duty Free will do its utmost to not only ensure a pleasant shopping environment and offer stores of the most popular brands but also develop content that customers want.”
