Shinsegae Duty Free hosts information session for tour guides for first time in three years

- Visa-free entry resumed for Japan, Taiwan, and other key countries, with a spike in tour groups anticipated
- Housed brands, artworks, and Shinsegae Duty Free benefits explained to 50 tour guides

On October 25 (Tuesday), 2022, Shinsegae Duty Free hosted an information session for tour guides* at L’Escape Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul. It was the first time such an event was held since 2019.

*In Korea, a “tour guide” refers to someone who is responsible for every aspect of an overseas tour group’s stay overseas, from departure to re-entry, including: itinerary management, meals, shopping, explanations of tourist attractions, and interpretation.

The information session was attended by approximately 50 tour guides based in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Attendees were given explanations of the brands currently affiliated with Shinsegae Duty Free, housed artworks, and unique Shinsegae Duty Free benefits. Popular Korean brands, including Mediheal (beauty), V&A (beauty), LIFEWORK (fashion), and Stretch Angels (fashion), gave presentations on the services and benefits they can offer to foreign tourists.

The information session was held only for tour guides based in Southeast Asia. Starting with a Vietnamese tour group on April 19, the number of Southeast Asian tourists who visited Shinsegae Duty Free this year, as of October 24, is 3,446—which is just 2% of the figure for 2019 but showing rapid growth.

Park Sang-wook, head of Shinsegae Duty Free’s Overseas Sales Team, said, “Although it may be a bit early to talk about ‘complete recovery,’ we expect the number of tour groups to increase sharply due to the resumption, on November 1, of visa-free entry from 91 countries, such as Japan, Taiwan, and Macao, which had been suspended due to the pandemic.”

Attendees noted that the fact the information session was hosted by a major duty-free service provider made them optimistic about the tourism industry’s recovery. Others were appreciative of the opportunity to network face-to-face with people in the duty-free business and fellow tour guides and the fact that Shinsegae Duty Free and its brands are enthusiastic about attracting customers. Many requested more of such information sessions so that tourists can receive more benefits.

Southeast Asian tourists are highly interested in Korean culture, which is why they are also enthusiastic about purchasing Korean cosmetics and fashion products. Shinsegae Duty Free is thus striving to not only attract tourists but also gain a foothold in the Southeast Asian market through various means, such as conducting live broadcasts with local social media influencers. It is also promoting traditional Korean culture through a video screened on a media façade (at the Myeongdong branch) that was created in partnership with the National Museum of Korea.
