Shinsegae Duty Free Discovers Up-and-coming Artists and Supports Their Entry into the Global Market

- First tax-free sales of artworks, contributing to the promotion of K-art
- Display of limited editions of artists in the store, enabling the public to experience fine art first-hand

Shinsegae Duty Free discovers up-and-coming Korean artists and helps their careers take off globally.

The Shinsegae Myeongdong store became Korea’s first duty-free establishment to open a venue for appreciating artworks, called “Art Space.” The branch, which was launched as a mixed-use shopping, culture, and experience facility, has been committed to providing customers with outstanding experiences. The company also promotes artists and their works on its domestic and international social media pages.

The duty-free store plans to introduce contemporary artists in the genres of fine art, street art, illustration, and others, as long as they can capture the sensibilities and spirit of the younger generation.

Artworks are showcased first at the Shinsegae Duty Free online shopping mall and then moved to a dedicated area on the eighth floor of the Myeongdong store, where the company is organizing an art exhibition that will be held from the 13th of this month.

Currently, Millennials and Generation Z, or “MZers,” are highly interested in artworks, enjoying them for fun and looking for more hands-on opportunities both online and in person.

Naturally, Shinsegae Duty Free began to collaborate with artists to design special exhibitions of diverse artworks.

Starting with illustrators Soña Lee and Weunah Kim, this series of exhibitions will feature up-and-coming artists and their distinctive artworks.

Now, the Myeongdong store’s Art Space has been converted into the “Artist's Room” to convey the unique emotions and feelings of the two artists. Visitors can enjoy their works as if they were in an art gallery.

The exhibits are for sale in the “Living” category of the Shinsegae Duty Free online shopping mall.

From August 30, they will also be available on Shinsegae Duty Free’s official Instagram, Weibo, and WeChat social media pages.

Soña Lee is a popular illustrator among MZers for her glamorous colors and unique drawings. While dividing her time between the Netherlands and Korea, she creates murals, art objects, and merchandise while working with the duty-free store on the theme for each season.

Notably, she produces and sells only 88 limited-edition prints each of several artworks. Each print is accompanied by a warranty card with the edition number on it. Those interested in her works will be happy to discover that this event is a great opportunity to acquire a limited-edition print.

Designer Weunah Kim is excellent at incorporating nature and everyday materials into her works with the aesthetic effects of watercolor. She also runs her own lifestyle brand shop, LYDIA Art & Scent.

A Shinsegae Duty Free official said, “We are offering a chance to relate to and communicate with our customers through the medium of art. As a duty-free store launched under the slogan of “Duty-Free Store Like No Other,” we will remain committed to pioneering the way to new and unique discoveries and becoming a leader in increasing the public’s access to culture and art.

Meanwhile, the Myeongdong store is also displaying Y, an interactive installation of Belgian artist Carsten Höller, while conducting an exhibition project entitled “Into the World Again” to deliver a message of hope to people struggling due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
